The Impact of “Equal Pay for Equal Work” Law in NYC on Women’s Career, 1902-1923
Project description: For this project I have collected archival payroll information of all teachers in public schools in New York City in the years 1902, 1908, 1915, and 1923. These data include names, addresses, exact positions, tenure, and annual earnings of all teachers in public schools in New York City (see snaphot from the original data and descriptive table). The introduction of “Equal Pay for Equal Work” law in 1911 significantly raised earnings of female teachers relative to male teachers (see plot). I am analyzing how this sudden change in women’s earnings affected their duration of employment, reallocation, and marriage decisions. Data collection for this project lasted for three years and was financially supported by the Population Studies and Training Center, William R. Rhodes Center, and the Department of Economics at Brown University. This project wouldn’t be possible without Ken Cobb and Paul Perkus who agreed to release the original records for digitization.
